Client project
Hack Metallgießerei: from wooden pattern to digital reference
Digitisation of historical wooden patterns from a stock of over 200 for which no digital reference existed.
- Industry
- Foundry
- Task
- Digitisation of historical wooden patterns
- My role
- Scanning and verification by me, printing through partners, casting at Hack
- Status
- Digital master for reproduction and archiving
Starting point
Many historical wooden patterns had no digital reference. Wear or loss of a pattern would have made reproduction more difficult.

Approach
- Original pattern
- Scan
- CAD and comparison
- Printing
- Casting at Hack
- Remeasurement against the digital master
I carry out the reverse engineering myself or assign it to a partner.

Stock and division of responsibilities
The historical stock of over 200 wooden patterns describes the starting situation, not the number already digitised. Scanning and checking are handled by 321mann, printing by partners and casting by Hack. I perform reverse engineering myself or assign it to a partner.
My own digital work and external pattern production complement each other here. This allows data preparation, pattern production and casting to be allocated appropriately among those involved.
Geometry comparison and technical questions to clarify
The colour comparison shows deviations between the scan and reconstruction. Assessing a component requires defined design-intent geometry, permissible deviations and the required scope of inspection. For further pattern tasks, wear, shrinkage and machining allowances are clarified for the specific project.
Additional pattern comparison
The direct comparison of an original wooden pattern with the 3D-printed part supplements the documentation of pattern reconstruction from the stock.

Benelli clutch cover: measure rather than guess
The digitised Benelli clutch cover allows a geometry comparison. A colour deviation map makes differences visible.
Source part
The starting point was the existing original part. It was scanned and reconstructed as a CAD model.

Measure rather than guess
Comparison between scan and CAD shows where and by how much the reconstruction differs from the original. The geometry is checked rather than assessed by eye alone.

Result
The printed comparison model shows the reconstructed geometry alongside the original. It demonstrates the geometry comparison, not a component's strength in service.

Result and status
- Digital master for reproduction and archiving
- Variants and corrections possible on the computer
- Reproduction can be checked against the digital reference
Why no figures are given here: whether a printed pattern saves anything, and how much, depends on the overall context, geometry, quantity and process chain. A single figure would promise something for your component that only the Process Check can establish.
